Yes, I understand the fantasy of the heroic Victoria Soto pulling a gun out of her friendly school-day cardigan and saving even more lives - including her own, but inherent risks aside - should anyone with a heart that huge have to be burdened with taking a life, no matter how troubled? Is it fair to pit someone with that much love for life against someone violent who feels they have nothing to lose? There has to be a better way. We need to find a functional, safe place in our society for the people who are suffering from an internal struggle to compassionately understand life and death consequences.
I know that this is pretty much none of my business, since I don’t have any answers, or even ideas, but I just want to keep believing that there are enough sensible people in the world to keep humanity from creating its own self-fulfilling apocalyptic prophecy. I still believe there are more heroes. I still believe in the good. I know we can find a peaceful way to keep each other safe.
